Regulation 35 of Police Regulations gives officers the ability to claim food expenses in certain circumstances – for example once you have completed 2 hours overtime you can claim a meal. Nowhere within the regulation does it mention how much can be claimed. It simply states that the claim must be necessary, reasonable and receipted. To help officers determine what would be reasonable the current force policy contains suggested amounts that would be reasonable (see the force finance site). The important thing to remember is that these are NOT maximum amounts that can be claimed. They are, as I have said, there to help officers determine what might be reasonable. Claims in excess of these amounts or where a receipt has not been obtained simply need to be authorised by the head of department. Claims should not be rejected on the grounds that they have exceeded the figures quoted in the policy.
