The public have shown overwhelming support for the work our police officers do in their communities by signing up to a social media campaign to boost morale over the festive season.

The message – “I’m saying thank you to the police officers who protect us 24/7. I #BelieveinBlue” – was sent out by more than 2,000 individuals and organisations at midday on Wednesday 14 December, reaching more than 1.3m people on social media via Thunderclap.

The Police Federation’s Believe in Blue campaign has amassed an online community of around 11,000 since its launch earlier this year, including some big supporters such as TV presenter Nick Knowles, who are helping to highlight and celebrate why British policing is the best in the world.

Federation chair Sarah Johnson said:

“Being a police officer is undoubtedly one of the toughest jobs around; much more than a job it’s a way of life. We know the vast majority of the British public are behind their police officers, but we need them to stand up and show their support for us. Thanks go to those who have engaged with the campaign so far.

“This year has been another challenging one, and of course there is no let up as the festive period approaches. Rather than swapping presents and tucking into turkey on Christmas Day, many of our officers will spend the day away from their friends and families and instead, be potentially putting their lives on the line to keep you safe.]

“Believe in Blue lets us highlight the strength and resilience of our police force, promoting the many acts of heroism by our officers, which unfortunately largely go unmentioned.”
