Police Helicopter Crash, Clutha Vaults Bar, Glasgow

4 December 2013

I refer to the above which so tragically took the lives of our two colleagues Tony Collins and Kirsty Nelis and their pilot David Traill on the evening of Friday 29th November 2013.

I would be obliged if you could pass on to your members the heartfelt thanks and appreciation of all in the Scottish Police Federation for the kind words of comfort, sympathy and support received in the immediate aftermath of this tragedy. Of course the loss will be most keenly felt by those who knew and loved them but that the police service response from across the world has been of such an outpouring of grief and love serves to remind us all what a truly great organisation the police family is. The police family is mourning the loss of our colleagues and friends and the thousands of messages received make this very painful process just that little bit easier.

We are also humbled by the many offers for financial assistance for the families and should any of your members wish to do so, this is being coordinated by the Scottish Police Benevolent Fund and details can be found at their web page www.spbf.org.uk

The funerals of both Tony and Kirsty will be predominantly for their families but consideration is being given to a memorial service at a later date. Should this take place, details will be communicated through your Chief Constable.

May I conclude by how I began and once again thank you and your members for your support. Police officers perform a job like no other and coming together at times of tragedy is what we do.

With every best wish
