There has been some confusion recently about the payment of statutory maternity pay (SMP) when an officer on maternity leave takes half pay for weeks 13 to 18 whilst receiving police maternity pay.

It was thought that they would lose their SMP for this period which could have resulted in a loss of £675. This has now been resolved and the force accepts that if an officer is on half pay for those weeks they will also receive SMP. This means that officers are not disadvantaged should they elect to take the half pay option. The only issue that still needs to be resolved is the actual process for payment of the SMP through payroll but this is simply an administration issue.
